A major goal of The Centre for GIS is to create and sustain a spirit of harmony in the community of GIS users in Qatar. This is initially achieved at The Centre's GIS training centre where the various individuals involved in GIS all receive their orientation and training.
Amongst those trained are each agency's GIS Coordinators who are ultimately responsible for setting up and maintaining the GIS databases in their respective agencies. At the Centre, the coordinators receive a variety of extensive GIS training classes, learn about implementation techniques, and generally acquaint themselves with other coordinators, which helps them in sustaining a rapport among their colleagues when they leave the GIS complex and join their respective agencies.
This rapport is maintained and enhanced through meetings of the GIS Coordinators Group which are held at The Centre once every two weeks. At these meetings ideas are shared, problems are solved, technical policies are formulated, and work sharing initiatives are explored.
In addition, the technical support and services offered by The Centre to the entire GIS community in Qatar, go a long way to cement friendships and strengthen the spirit of community.
Cooperation, sharing and coordination of GIS activities are all encouraged by The Centre for GIS, particularly when it comes to the development of applications. There is a mutual agreement to clearly document any tools, utilities and scripts that anyone develops so they can be shared by all.
Such efforts, in the long run, save time and money for all and help to ensure the reliability as well as the suitability of the products developed.
Finally, by enforcing adherence to all GIS standards, The Centre
has ensured compatibility throughout the GIS databases in Qatar.
Compatibility itself tends to encourage and sustain cooperation
because the data is readily transferred and easy to
use.
