The GIS Applications Demonstrations (GIS City) was opened by H.E. Ali Bin Saeed Al-Khayarin, Minister of Municipal Affairs & Agriculture. The demonstrations were an open forum highlighting projects and case studies from several government departments of The State of Qatar involved in the nation-wide implementation of GIS. A walk through the city gave a good overview of how a coordinated/standardized nation-wide GIS implementation is helping government of Qatar provide enhanced services to its citizens and how the citizens are reaping the benefits of GIS. The city did replicate a typical metropolis with government offices providing day-to-day services using GIS and accessing data from a variety of distributed GIS databases. The presenters displayed their projects, describing techniques, benefits and accomplishments and answered questions from the visitors. The city was built at the Sheraton Doha Hotel & Resort and was linked by a fibre optic connection to GISnet (Qatar's FDDI based fibre optic network linking GIS databases of all participating government agencies).
