This one day workshop will provide an overview of GPS basics for managers and supervisors. It will be a non-technical overview of GPS concepts including:

    • A brief history of GPS from concept to Initial Operational Capability (IOC) and current status
  • System segments
    • The space, control, and user segments are discussed
  • Operational fundamentals
    • How GPS works and considerations for successful application of GPS
  • GPS datums and coordinate systems
    • Practical fundamentals of datums and coordinate systems to ensure compatibility between GPS and GIS
  • GPS survey methodologies, planning and field surveys
    • Practical considerations for GPS surveying including project accuracy requirements, choice of survey methodology to suit the project, guide to observation times and intervals, hardware and software requirements, personnel requirements, reconnaissance, field preparation, and data collection
  • GPS receivers
    • Receiver types, options, and purchasing considerations
  • GPS economics
    • GPS versus classical surveying, advantages of GPS, disadvantages of GPS, decision factors in selecting GPS, GPS production advantages, and GPS related costs
  • GPS applications
    • An overview of applications and projects that have successfully used GPS
