Population growth and the rapid pace of agricultural,
urban and industrial development places increasing pressures
on the environment. Factors affecting the environment and
mankind's management of natural resources are many and
varied, and change as development takes place. GIS
functionality enables data on these dynamic and varied
factors influencing the environment and its management to be
collated, analysed and presented in a form that can be
easily assimilated. GIS also provides sufficient flexibility
to allow changes in environment controls and influences to
be incorporated in plans, programmes and projects.
This paper considers the role of GIS as a tool for
environmental management and identifies a number of
applications. Several case studies describing the use of GIS
for environmental management within the Sultanate of Oman
are described with special reference to its use on the
Arabian Oryx Sanctuary Project.
