The Center for Geographic Information Systems (CGIS) has increased its inter/intranet services and has more to offer to its users. Map Server, an internet/intranet based project using the latest Client-Server technology helps exploring Qatar and getting dynamically generated maps with in-depth information The intranet Map Server which is available in the GISnet offers three applications: Explore Qatar, GPS Data-Online and Survey Stations of Qatar. In the Explore Qatar application, Doha, Al Rayyan and Al Khor municipalities have been covered. The addition of Ortho images adds a new dimension to the Map Server. Users can utilise a set menu comprising street addresses, telephone numbers, and landmarks to easily locate their places of interest.
The GPS application enables a user to download, up to the last 13 days GPS data from the base station inorder to apply differential correction. The Survey Station application allows the users to locate survey stations of Qatar by entering the Names, Co-ordinates, Sheet numbers or Landmarks and print their description sheets and monument details at their desktops. The Internet Map server offers the facility of Exploring Qatar specifically Doha and Al Rayyan municipalities through street addresses and landmarks. Users can type in addresses or click on the landmarks function which displays hotels, banks, clinics, pharmacies schools, petrol stations, etc to get to their area of interest. Other functions available include Spatial queries which identifies three features on the map with respect to a selected location. There are also facilities to toggle and display various layers and labels on the map. The increased availability of these facilities incorporates functions like zooming, panning and getting a full extent of the map of Qatar. |
