The award was given to the GIS Unit of the Drainage Division under the Civil Engineering Department of the Ministry for its presentation of the "Drainage Geographic Information Kiosk."
The Urban and Regional Information Systems Association's (URISA) Exemplary Systems in Government (ESIG) award was received by a delegation representing Qatar headed by the Head of the Center for GIS Qassim Mohammed Al-Ghanim, Head of Administration Hussain A. Al-Sayegh and Head of the GIS Section at Drainage Division, Yasser Mustafa Noor in Toronto, Canada. The ESIG award falls in the Public Works and Engineering Systems category. The previous URISA award was given to the Center for GIS in 1992 for its exceptional achievements in the application of the GIS technology. The representatives from Qatar were in Canada following a visit to the United States where they attended a five day (July 7 - 12) Environmental Systems Research Institut (ESRI) Conference. The delegation was in Toronto to attend the URISA Conference and Exposition where they were exposed to the different aspects of improving and developing the GIS technology. During their visit, the Qatar representatives reached an agreement to form new chapters of URISA for the Gulf States headed by the State of Qatar.
Also in Canada, the delegation visited Geomatics, an entity under the Ministry of Natural Resources and the Intermap company. Renewal of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed by the two parties in 1992 with Geomatics, training and exchange of expertise were among the issues discussed. Preliminary accords on taking colour ortho-images, radar images, 3Ds and the ways and means of utilising them in the implementation of GIS were signed with Intermap.
On their return journey, the delegation made a stop over
in Amman, the Jordanian capital where they met with high
level government officials from various departments. They
also paid a visit to the Royal Geographic Center where they
were exposed to its units and facilities. Both parties
agreed in principle, to initiate training programmes and
exchange expertise. In all, the delegation's foreign trip
was a huge success. |
