3D Modeling With GIS

by Dr. Rachel Kalpana George, GIS Coordinator for Agriculture.

3-D GIS, using digital elevation data with powerful analytical software, and the power of today's computer hardware can provide a true-to-scale solid geometrical model of the earth.

Though nrelatively new, 3-D GIS has found applications in many fields, such as military applications (strategic planning); road engineering (cut/fill analysis); mining (volumetric pile/pit evaluation); landscape planning; urban design; pipeline routing; broadcast tower positioning; etc.

Yo create true-to-scale representations of the country's terrain features for analytical purposes, the terrain heights of Qatar have been sampled and stored in digital files

These 3-D GIS renditions were generated using the digital elevation model (DEM) and other data sets available from CGIS.
