The Centre for GIS (CGIS) is pleased to announce the availability of the eagerly anticipated Qatar Image Map, both in 1:100,000 and 1:200,000 scales.

Based on satellite data acquired in September 1993 by SPOT Image of France, the new maps took more than a year to produce. Using satellite imagery as a base, vector data was overlaid, which included a primary horizontal and vertical network used for surveying control points, spot heights or elevations, major place names, 4 categories of roads, wadis, and race courses. The maps are designed for general use by government departments for their survey planning, consultants and building engineers, and the general public. They will replace the older, vector-based maps, currently available from CGIS.

Beautiful to look at, the maps essentially provide a detailed, photographic image of the entire country of Qatar. One challenge of the production team was applying image enhancement techniques to the data in order to change the vegetation color, which normally appears red on a satellite image to a more natural shade of green.

Another challenge was to match the color balance of the final prints to the approved proofs, which were based upon high resolution 1200 dpi inkjet plots.

"This is the map of the future," states Zul Jiwani, head of CGIS. "I have a very strong feeling that this will become the trend. Maps produced in this manner are cheaper, faster, and have more information."

The maps were produced in cooperation with Geomatics Canada (GC). "The staff at GC have done a terrific job," concludes Jiwani and echoed by his team at CGIS.

The 1:200,000 scale map measures 72 x 110 centimeters and is priced at QR 50. The 1:100,000 scale map measures 144 x 220 centimeters, comes in 4 tiled sections, and costs QR 200.
