Plans for GIS/GPS '97 Conference Discussed

Qatar's National GIS Steering Committee Holds First Meeting in New Year

The State of Qatar's National Geographic Information System (GIS) Steering Committee conducted its first meeting of the year on January 14, 1996 at the offices of the country's Centre for GIS.

The committee is chaired by H.E. Sheikh Ahmed Bin Hamad Al-Thani, Qatar's Minister of Municipal Affairs and Agriculture, and composed of a select number of directors and managers working within the Centre for GIS and the various government ministries and agencies using GIS technology.

Among the topics discussed at the meeting was a progress report on GIS/GPS Conference '97, an internationally recognized conference that attracts world-renowned authorities on geographic information system and global positioning system technologies to Doha. The next conference will be held from March 2-4, 1997 at the Doha Sheraton Hotel.

Comments Hussain Ali A. Al-Sayegh, Secretary General of the National GIS Steering Committee, "Since Qatar is the first country in the world to implement a truly nationwide GIS, we have attracted the attention of many notable authorities on geographic information system and related technologies. Over the years, we have received many delegations from around the world at our Centre for GIS, which has stimulated the development of a number of ongoing GIS technology exchange programs. Building upon our expertise in this field and the success of GIS Conference '93, we are certain that next year's conference will attract even greater interest from those involved or interested in GIS and GPS technology from both our region here in the Gulf as well other parts of the world."
