As the Editor-in-Chief of Bits & Bytes, our
previous CGIS newsletter, it was not an easy
decision for me to halt its production after
successfully publishing 6 issues. In retrospect,
Bits & Bytes proved to be an important learning
experience for our editorial and production teams,
allowing us to explore editorial content,
production techniques, and readership expectations.
When Jim Baumann joined CGIS as its
Communications Coordinator, I recognized that the
opportune moment had arisen to seriously consider
renewing our commitment to publishing a CGIS
newsletter.
Jim is an experienced writer/editor on GIS
topics and has written articles on various aspects
of the computer graphics industry for more than 15
years. Before joining CGIS, he was employed by ESRI
at their headquarters in California and he has
previous Middle East experience, having worked in
Saudi Arabia for Saudi Aramco.
Subsequent meetings with core staff members
indicated both a desire and a willingness to put in
the effort necessary to produce a high quality
publication representative of the many
accomplishments and activities at CGIS and among of
our GIS user community.

After many suggestions and much discussion, we
decided on Al Khabar or "The News" as the title of
our new newsletter. We believe that our new title
is simple, direct, and reflects both the breadth of
the topics we intend to survey, as well as the
geographic region of our readership.
Our editorial goal is to not only publicize the
GIS activities of Qatar, but those of our region as
well. Within the publication, you will find
articles on application development, new product
announcements, GIS activities, user tips, and so
forth. We hope to create a forum for the exchange
of ideas and information about this exciting
technology to which we have dedicated ourselves. I
would like to take this opportunity to encourage
you to submit materials to the newsletter. This is
your publication and we want to promote your
activities.
I am aware of the challenges that lay before us,
but am confident that with the support of our
dedicated staff and you, our readers, the success
of Al Khabar is assured.
