MapServer page in Netscape BrowserThe Centre for Geographic Information Systems (CGIS) has made a major breakthrough. The CGIS MapServer which previously had the Internet Explorer support is now accessible via Netscape.

"This is a major achievement," remarks Faiz Mohammed, Head of the Technology Development Services (TDS). "We have been working on this for a few months now and having completed it gives us both relief and pleasure. I am glad to say that the results are commendable."

Now it is possible to view Map Server (internet and intranet) applications in all versions of both the Netscape and Microsoft Internet Explorer. These include the latest releases Netscape Communicator and Internet Explorer 4.0.

Along with these changes comes a new graphical user interface (GUI), and a new version of the Explore Qatar application. "This new Explore Qatar version is more dynamic and faster to use because of the code optimization that has been done on the Server side," comments Fawaz, application developer, TDS.

"The interface is also more user friendly and of course more appealing," adds Masoun Shahbandar, the Centre's graphic lab supervisor.

The main objective of the Centre for GIS is to have the society in general getting involved as much as possible in the GIS technology. "Having our Mapserver supporting both browsers will enable us to reach out to a wider range of approximately 95 per cent of the total population worldwide which has access to the Web. This is just the beginning. Infact, we are in the process of developing another GIS application for our Home Page which is something to look forward to." adds Faiz.
